Ballyteige Lough is a tidal estuary in southeast Ireland. It is a protected nature reserve that includes mudflats and salt marshes. The seaward side of the Lough is enclosed by a nine kilometre sand dune system. It is home to numerous breeding and migratory birds.

During daily walks, I have become preoccupied by the rubbish washing in with the tides. Seventy percent of marine litter is plastic. While only about fifteen percent of it ends up on shores, it is present on every shoreline in the world. The effect on marine ecosystems is catastrophic.

Inspired by environmentally concerned photographers such as Eduardo Leal and Mandy Barker, this panel aims to highlight this issue. These images depict just some of the plastic items that I have encountered in the landscape where they were found.  Some of this plastic has seemingly taken the place of the threatened wildlife that inhabits the estuary.
